"Barrie Public Library wants to reduce period poverty. Feel free to take one for yourself or for someone you know." Sign sits over a bin with boxes of pads and tampons. What is period poverty?

From the UNFA (United Nations Sexual and Reproductive Health Agency) "Period poverty describes the struggle many low-income women and girls face while trying to afford menstrual products. The term also refers to the increase economic vulnerability women and girls face due to the financial burden posed by menstrual supplies."

Why does BPL care?

We recognize that period poverty is real in our community. Many public organizations, such as school boards, are taking a similar initiative to support a movement for free menstrual product availability across Canada.

How are we helping?

We have pads and tampons available in all public washrooms, male and female, at all locations.
